There are only a handful of spices used to make homemade pumpkin pie spice. Traditionally, allspice and ginger were used to flavor pumpkin, and cinnamon is a popular addition to the blend.

  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground ginger
  • ¾ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cloves

  1. I’m wondering why in your recipe for pumpkin pie spice you call for allspice plus cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves when allspice is made up of those 3 spices already? Doesn’t make sense to me, please explain, thanks.

    1. Bonnie, that is a great question! Allspice is a berry from a tree used as a spice, with flavors suggestive of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. Read more about it here. Intersting!

    1. Hi Shannon! Allspice and cloves have a similar taste profile. If you are allergic to cloves, you can easily swap out the cloves with allspice.

  5. This is probably a dumb question: I would like to make the pumpkin muffins, but only half the recipe, as you said you have done before. So, did you just use 2 eggs?

    1. Can you please let me know which recipe it was? If it was this pumpkin muffin recipe, 1 beaten egg is about 3 tablespoons. In this case, you would need 1 egg plus 1.5 tablespoons of the second egg.

  6. I love all your recipes Holly and have made several of them.
    I made the Pumpkin Pie Spice mixture the other day and used it today in the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cookies for my grandsons. Neither has a sweet tooth so these are perfect for them to take home.
    I showed this spice mix recipe to a friend the other day and she asked me how to tell how much to use since you’re not using measurements of each spice instead….I couldn’t answer her…please Holly give me answer for her! Thanks so much!!5 stars

    1. Thank you for sharing my recipe with your friend. It would depend on the recipe she was using it in but for the most part it should replace the amount of spices called for in the original recipe.

  8. A nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves mix is a good substitute for Allspice.

    My question is: Why do you have allspice + the other ingredients listed in your homemade pumpkin spice mix. Just wondering if it will really make a difference. I live in Switzerland and it is hard to get allspice here. I make my own pumpkin pie spice with: cinnamon, ginger and cloves (no nutmeg).

    I AM going to use your pumpkin pie spice mix recipe for the cream cheese pumpkin pie that I am making…..minus the all spice.

    1. You can certainly leave out the allspice if it’s unavailable. It just adds an extra bit of flavor but will still be great without.

  9. I have been teaching a bunch of classes around winter squash. I literally just told my last class that if the learn one thing it should be to make their own pumpkin pie spice. It’s less expensive, less wasteful, and of course, they can customize it to their taste. Can’t wait to try your version. Yum!
