Crockpot Sweet Potato Casserole is everything it sounds like and the perfect set it forget version of a traditional Sweet Potato Casserole! The potatoes do not need to be boiled first, all of the cooking happens right in the slow cooker!

Serve alongside all of the classic Thanksgiving sides. Like the best mashed potatoes, a cheesy green bean casserole, and of course the classic Thanksgiving stuffing. It’s a perfect addition!

Prepping Sweet Potatoes for Casserole

It’s important to remove the tough skin from the sweet potatoes.

  1. Rinse sweet potatoes and peel them entirely.
  2. Cut into uniform cubes so they cook evenly, in this case, 1” cubes.

And, that’s it. Just toss them in the crockpot and get ready for a delicious side dish!

How Long to Cook Sweet Potato Casserole in a CrockPot

Depending on how quickly you want them finished you can either cook them on high or low.

  • Low: Cook them overnight or while at work on low for 8 hours.
  • High: If you are in a bit of a hurry, cook them on high for about 4 hours.

Either method will yield perfectly cooked, creamy sweet potatoes! Don’t forget to add the pecan topping at the end!

To Mash Sweet Potatoes

You can serve these as smashed (with little chunks) or mashed sweet potatoes (nice and smooth). Use a potato masher for a smashed texture, if you’d like the really smooth, use a hand mixer or an immersion blender.

Toppings

I use a buttery brown sugar pecan topping. If you’d like to add marshmallows, simply add to the slow cooker and close the lid for 5 minutes or so. They will melt/soften.

A streusel topping is great on this too, combine

How to Store Leftovers

Refrigerator: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days!

Freezer: Sweet Potato Casserole can easily be frozen. Scoop it into a zippered bag or a freezer container and be sure to label it with the date.

Reheat: When you are ready to reheat, simply give it a stir, maybe give it an extra dash of pumpkin pie spice and pop it in the microwave!

  1. I fixed this recipe this afternoon and 4 hours later It was bubbling and ready to eat. I was satisfied with the sweetness so I did not prepare the topping. I just added some crushed pecans per individual serving. Easy to prepare and delicious. Thank you for sharing!5 stars

  2. as a family who is not a fan of marshmallows, this recipe was a hit lol. we had never had sweet potatoes at the thanksgiving table because when you think of them you always think of that toasted marshmallow top, which is a shame because we do really enjoy sweet potatoes otherwise. this recipe was simple, straightforward, and delicious!5 stars

  3. Delicious. I prepared this recipe the night before by cooking the yams in a pan on the stove then mashed them up and mixed in the ingredients as per the recipe, placing them into the crockpot and refrigerated overnight.
About 4 hours before dinner, I cooked them in the crockpot. Topped with mini marshmallows (kids) about 5 minutes prior to serving.
Turned out great. Guests gobbled them up.4 stars

    1. We haven’t tried doubling this recipe but would love to hear how it turns out for you.

    1. I am not sure if there would be enough room to double this recipe in a 6 qt crockpot. If you do attempt it, just make sure to fill your crockpot only ¾ full. Overfilling can affect the cooking time.

  4. I made it per the recipe. It was delicious! Some of my family asked for the recipe. It was simple to make and perfect for traveling to another household for Thanksgiving dinner. I personally am not a fan of sweet potato dishes but know it is one of the traditional sides. However, I really enjoyed this dish. Thanks!5 stars

  5. Do you have to use dark brown sugar or can the light brown sugar be used in both the topping and main part?

  6. Is it possible to dump on a baking dish to stick in oven & melt marshmallows on top? Also is it possible to add a little milk to the crockpot for a creamier consistency?

    1. Hi Marissa, while we’ve not tried, that, I think it’d work. I’d suggest adding a little cream near the end if you’d like, then adding it to a pan and melting the marshmallows. You may enjoy trying this sweet potato casserole!

  7. My cousin made these for Thanksgiving. I cannot stress enough that SHE DOESN’T COOK. These were delicious! I have never cared for sweet potatoes, but insisted she tell me where she got the recipe.5 stars

  8. Can I cut up the potatoes and put the mixture on and let it sit overnight in the fridge or should I cook the potatoes?

    1. This should work just fine prepared ahead of time. If it is cold from the fridge it may need extra time to cook.

  9. A simple and easy to make sweet potato casserole recipe i have ever tried so far. Thanks for sharing this recipe with all of us. 5 stars

    1. Sorry Jolynn, we have never tried this recipe in the instant pot. But you could try this recipe using the slow cook function on your instant pot.

  10. I just made the crockpot sweet potato casserole and it was easy and the best I’ve ever eaten!! The hardest part was peeling the taters. My boys loved it. Thank you Holly5 stars

    1. I’ve only made this in a large slow cooker which has lots of surface area for the potatoes to cook. They may take longer in a smaller slow cooker. I would suggest planning to have them done early in case they need extra time. If they are done early, they’ll keep well on warm for a while.

      1. Hi Dorothy, we have never tried this recipe with canned sweet potatoes. However if they are already cooked you will want to reduce the crockpot cooking time to ensure they don’t overcook. Let us know how it turns out!

  11. Have you ever made this without mashing them up? I would love to try this but my son wont eat them mashed up.

    1. Hi Yolanda, we haven’t but I am sure it would still be delicious. Just skip step 5 in the recipe. Let us know if your son enjoys them!
