So incredibly easy to make and wonderfully delicious, these 30-Minute Dinner Rolls are the perfect addition to any meal!
There is truly no smell as amazing as fresh warm bread or rolls coming out of the oven! I remember coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked buns or bread, ready and waiting as the perfect after school snack! To this day when I smell fresh baking, I am immediately transported to that happy time and place of my childhood.
Fast forward to today with busy work schedules, running to kids activities and trying to simply keep up with life, it is difficult to put together a meal – let alone add on the extras!
This 30-Minute Dinner Roll recipe is wonderful because it is truly so easy to prepare, the buns take a short time to rise and the result is such a delicious treat that it is worth the extra effort! What a great side to enjoy with a hot and tasty bowl of soup or chili!
I love the convenience of buying dinner rolls from the store and the quality is very nice. In most cases however, store bought items have additives or preservatives in order to keep a longer shelf life. Making these homemade dinner rolls from scratch ensures that nothing is added except wholesome goodness! And these tasty little buns never last long enough to have to worry about shelf life!
If you are lucky enough to have any left over the next day, they do stay fresh and are so wonderful served with butter and jam in the morning! I love to enjoy this special treat with my morning coffee – it is comfort food at it’s best!
Our sense of smell is one of the most highly acute of all our senses and tends to influence our mood. It is no small wonder that when we smell freshly baked dinner rolls, it makes us feel happy and excited in anticipation of these tender, tasty treats!
30 Minute Dinner Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 tablespoon softened butter
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour I used closer to 3
- ⅛ cup milk room temperature
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400*F.
-
In a large bowl, combine 1 cup water, oil, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until yeast is bubbly (about 8 minutes). Stir in beaten egg, softened butter, and salt.
-
With a stand mixer or by hand, add flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky. Knead by hand 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
-
Divide dough into 18 even pieces, and form into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel.
-
Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
-
Lightly brush with milk and bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.

Delicious and easy!
I made this and used 4 cups of flour and added a lot more by tablespoons afterwards. Took forever for the dough to not be sticky. What did I do wrong??
Hi Dasha, you may have added too much liquid to the recipe.
hi, can these rest for longer than 40 minutes. would be nice to prep early and pop them in the oven right before dinner.
Hi Tiffany, if making these ahead of time you can pop them in the fridge and them bring them out to rise before cooking.
I made a 1/2 batch as there are only 2 of us in the home. I substituted ground flax seed for the egg and added some chopped freshly roasted green chilis and Monterey cheese cube’s. Absolutely delicious! It was the perfect compliment to my southwest chicken soup.
This recipe is a real winner. I was skeptical about such quick rolls but it works and there’s no yeasty flavour. We make ours with 1Tbsp flax and 3Tbsp water instead of an egg, and coconut milk brushed on the top. The last batch, we made some cinnamon rolls and cardamom rolls, which were amazing. We’ve also tried adding up to a cup of whole wheat flour, and they still bake up fluffy and soft and delicious. Our family will return to this recipe again and again.
That sounds amazing! I am glad you enjoyed them so much.
What kind of milk do you use here? I’m assuming it’s cow’s milk. Do you use whole milk?
It is just brushed on top of the buns so you can use whichever milk you have on hand.
Great quick occasion rolls. We may add a little more sugar and salt next time, but they are going fast. TUG
I have made these rolls so many times. They are wonderful just the way the recipe is written and I have shared the recipe with so many. Something I just started doing is adding my sourdough discard in it. I did not know these rolls could get any better, but they did. Excellent recipe!
can you use milk other than water? Maybe a little more butter?
Hi David, I have only made this recipe as listed. I would love to hear how it turns out for you!
Would this recipe work for cinnamon buns?
I have never tried making this recipe as cinnamon buns but other readers have with good results.
Beautiful dinner rolls! Such an easy recipe to follow. I am by no means a baker but these turned out so well! Thanks so much
Easy to make, great flavor and everyone loves them! This recipe is a keeper. Thanks for all your hard work, it’s sure appreciated at our house!
These were a hit! They were tasty and really did only take 30 min. My family would not stop eating them, even after dinner.
today was my first time making these rolls and they turned out great
First time ever making bread, was simple and they turned out amazing.
Ive baked these rolls plenty times, this is a no fail recipe and a great hit… always come out nice and fluffy. Can I alter this recipe and and a block of cheese to the middle before baking to make this a cheese roll?
I haven’t tried this with cheese but sounds delicious. Let us know how it goes!
I’ve made these several times and they are always a hit. My husband recently posted pics on Facebook and I got requests for the recipe, including my daughter in law.
Thank you for sharing Teresa! I love hearing how much people enjoy these quick and tasty rolls!
First time I baked them, they were perfect. Today, they fell. Just like a cake might fall. I used Bread flour. Would that contribute to the problem. I also use egg whites instead of an egg. It didn’t bother the recipe the first time. I can’t remember if I used all purpose or the bread flour the first time.
The recipe calls for all purpose flour. Using different ingredients could cause them to not turn out quite the same. Hopefully they’ll be perfect next time for you again Lenore!
