So incredibly easy to make and wonderfully delicious, these 30-Minute Dinner Rolls are the perfect addition to any meal!
There is truly no smell as amazing as fresh warm bread or rolls coming out of the oven! I remember coming home from school to the smell of freshly baked buns or bread, ready and waiting as the perfect after school snack! To this day when I smell fresh baking, I am immediately transported to that happy time and place of my childhood.
Fast forward to today with busy work schedules, running to kids activities and trying to simply keep up with life, it is difficult to put together a meal – let alone add on the extras!
This 30-Minute Dinner Roll recipe is wonderful because it is truly so easy to prepare, the buns take a short time to rise and the result is such a delicious treat that it is worth the extra effort! What a great side to enjoy with a hot and tasty bowl of soup or chili!
I love the convenience of buying dinner rolls from the store and the quality is very nice. In most cases however, store bought items have additives or preservatives in order to keep a longer shelf life. Making these homemade dinner rolls from scratch ensures that nothing is added except wholesome goodness! And these tasty little buns never last long enough to have to worry about shelf life!
If you are lucky enough to have any left over the next day, they do stay fresh and are so wonderful served with butter and jam in the morning! I love to enjoy this special treat with my morning coffee – it is comfort food at it’s best!
Our sense of smell is one of the most highly acute of all our senses and tends to influence our mood. It is no small wonder that when we smell freshly baked dinner rolls, it makes us feel happy and excited in anticipation of these tender, tasty treats!
30 Minute Dinner Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 tablespoon softened butter
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3 to 4 cups all-purpose flour I used closer to 3
- ⅛ cup milk room temperature
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400*F.
-
In a large bowl, combine 1 cup water, oil, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until yeast is bubbly (about 8 minutes). Stir in beaten egg, softened butter, and salt.
-
With a stand mixer or by hand, add flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft dough that isn’t sticky. Knead by hand 10 minutes or 5 minutes with a stand mixer.
-
Divide dough into 18 even pieces, and form into balls. Place in a greased pan and cover with parchment paper and a kitchen towel.
-
Let rise 10 minutes in a warm place. (You can allow them to rise up to an additional 30 minutes if time allows).
-
Lightly brush with milk and bake on the middle rack for 10-12 minutes or just until browned.

I love this recipe!!!! It’s so easy!
This is the best dinner roll recipe I’ve ever tried! 100/10!!
Hi,
I’m going to try to make these dinner rolls. Never made rolls before. I’m 61 yo. I think I can do it! Thank you so much for this simple recipe! Wish you were here to help me make them!
I can’t wait to hear how they turn out for you Leta!
I made these foe the second time tonight and can not figure out why they are rated so highly. They are super bland, even buttered they aren’t anything appealing.
Can these dinner rolls be portioned and frozen after preparing the dough?
Hi Maggie, the cooked buns freeze and reheat well. I have not tried freezing them first though. I think it would work but can’t say for sure. Other readers have had success, let us know if you try it!
Beautiful dough. I split the recipe in half and had to add about 2c of flour overall, but lovely texture and fragrance.
Easy quick recipe and rolls were amazing!
I love how easy and fast the recipe was. it was bland though I’m not sure if it’s because I switched sugar out for honey or because I used olive oil. I plan on trying again because of how fast they are. any tips? I used bread machine yeast not sure if that would do it either.
Hi Lindsey, I have only made this recipe as listed so I can not say for sure. Maybe another reader can offer some advice.
The first time I made these, they were bland too. The second time I didn’t do the milk wash and instead brushed with melted butter when they came out. Also, I sprinkled everything bagel seasoning on them before baking. Much better :)
My new go-to recipe. I use it to make cinnamon raisin buns, various sweet and savory breads, hot dog and hamburger buns, and whatever else I can think of. Quick and easy. I love it!
Absolutely as easy as the recipe describes, as beautiful as the picture, and so delicious!! I can’t believe I made these dinner rolls!! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
OMG!!! I have been attempting to become a baker for about 3 to 4 years. I’ve tried so many recipes. Even the recipe for my bread machine. Once I made some edible wheat rolls. I also made some edible bread sticks. Notice I said edible not good This recipe is by far the best: of the best: of the best: I messed up the recipe and they still turned out WONDERFUL!
I used instant yeast instead of regular yeast. I let them rise in the countertop oven on a low setting of 150 alternating on and off for the full 30 minutes. Thank you for posting this non baker friendly recipe. I can see why the reviews were so good. They came together so easy. I combined the wet ingredients (not in the correct order according to recipe. not intentional, I just messed up). Then I took the dry ingredients together with the addition of 1 tablespoon of vital wheat gluten for each cup of flour. I also used two cup AP flour and one cup wheat flour.
Now you can see how I’m surprised they turned on anywhere near good. To the person reading this review. USE THIS ORIGINAL RECIPE!!!
So glad you enjoyed it, Stephanie!
Made these rolls for dinner over the weekend and everyone loved them. Made 24 and there was none left. Made them again today so I could have some.
The 30 minute crescent rolls are just as good.
I’ve made this recipe 3 times now, most recently yesterday for Easter Dinner. They are amazing! They’re super easy to make, they bake up beautifully, and everyone loves them. I wanted to get away from store-bought or frozen bake-at-home rolls because of all the extra chemically stuff in them and these are perfect. Before baking, I brush them with butter and sprinkle them with chopped fresh rosemary and kosher salt. Yum! Thank you for this recipe :)
Kept waiting for them to brown, only the under side did. Also, somewhat dense even though I initially proofed the dough for 30 minutes. Overall, not completely let down. Pretty good but needs some tweaking.
I tried this recipe once on a whim and they came out great. I’ve made them several times since then and the extra 30 minute proof time makes them even better if you plan a little bit ahead.
I used olive oil for the oil and wasn’t a fan of the flavor it gave but the rolls would’ve been excellent other than that!
Question – is it okay to make a double-batch in one go, or should I do 2 separate batches?
I’ve made these before in a single batch and they were excellent. Easy, quick, soft, and tasty!
For best results I would make two batches, Lindsay.
Great recipe for quick dinner rolls. I made them exactly as instructed and it was super easy to follow and they came out delicious!
Hello Holly! I’m a bit inexperienced with bread, so wanted to ask – would it be ok to add some herbs to this dough? My aunt had a beautiful herbed roll recipe but it takes a lot longer to make. Wondering if I could get the same effect by adding some to this? Thank you!
Adding garlic or herbs to the dough sounds like a delicious idea, Ruthie! We would love to hear how that turns out for you!
perfect dinner rolls even I can make !!!!!
